What to expect from ‘Get Your Geek On’

We’re counting down the days until our spectacular weekend of geek-themed celebrations officially kicks off. There’s so much to look forward to with ‘Get Your Geek On’, including a lineup of events to suit everyone,

Even if you don’t consider yourself to be a franchise fanatic or ‘geeky’ person by nature, we guarantee that you’ll get invested in this fantastic takeover of all-things fandom-related. We’re aiming to get as many folks involved as possible to really to create an incredible community-based event that everyone can enjoy.

Events at ‘Get Your Geek On’ begin as soon as the weekend commences. On Friday 21st July, you can catch Star Wars legend Andrew Lawden at Geek Retreat between 6-8pm for our free ‘an audience with’ event. Andrew has plenty of exciting tales to tell from his time spent on the set of Star Wars: Episode 1 The Phantom Menace, where he stepped in as a stand-in stunt double for Liam Neeson. If you’re a fan of the franchise and want the details on what it’s really like behind the scenes of a Star Wars set, make sure you sign up!

You can also catch Andrew in action in the days following on Princess Street. He’ll be carrying out ‘Jedi training sessions’ across the whole of the weekend, starting from 10:30am on the Saturday. It’s an opportunity for Star Wars fans to test their lightsaber-wielding skills in real life with full sized replicas to practice with. Find out if you’ve got what it takes to train as a Jedi with the man who’s seen it all first-hand and take home your very own badge, keyring and certificate!

During the Saturday and Sunday, you can expect to see weird, wacky and wonderful celebrations of all things ‘geeky’ on every corner of Huddersfield town centre. Giant inflatables at Pigeon Park, New Street and St George’s Square, superhero character trails found through the LoyalFree app and  ‘geek-themed’ merchandise sold under marquees at New Street and St Peter’s Church are just a few examples of the exciting things to do and see. Be sure to also check out the realistic BatMobile and BumbleBee car replicas on King Street and New Street- these iconic duplicate vehicles need to be seen to be appreciated!

Town centre visitors can also enjoy an open-air cinema experience from the central outdoor setting of the Lawrence Batley Theatre. Take your pick between two fantastic films, voted for through our Facebook page: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (4pm- 6pm) and Ghostbusters (8pm-10pm). If you’d like to add a little bit of luxury to the whole experience, you can even go VIP (get your own popcorn and deckchair)!

We highly encourage that visitors dress up and fully immerse themselves within the excitement of the weekend! It’s an opportunity to unleash your inner geek or enjoy an opportunity to embrace what you love! Remember, this is Huddersfield’s FIRST EVER outdoor comic con: that’s a milestone well worth celebrating!
