Anti-purse dipping campaign targets thieves

An anti-purse dipping initiative is being championed by Huddersfield BID to protect more vulnerable shoppers visiting the town centre

Huddersfield BID have launched the ‘Beware of purse dippers’ campaign, for which they have funded 2,000 bright orange money wallets with an attached bell to prevent cash being stolen from bags.

The wallets, which will be available in all high street banks, money exchanges and the Post Office, have been purchased by the BID after hearing about elderly visitors being targeted by thieves.

The campaign follows a small number of thefts over the festive period. In one incident, a woman in her 90s had over £2,000 stolen from her bag and the police contacted Huddersfield BID to see what more could be done.

Sam Sharp, Huddersfield BID Manager, said: “The safety of our town centre visitors is important to us, and we work hard to make sure visitors feel safe and confident and that they have a good experience when visiting Huddersfield. This initiative is exactly what Huddersfield BID is here for, to work with stakeholders in the town, coordinate and fund a project that will improve the experience of customers.

“This campaign, working alongside the police and with the support of the banks and Post Office, aims to support the individuals where their money is withdrawn. It is accompanied by advice on how to keep belongings safe. If it helps just one person, it will be worth every penny.

“If you are concerned about your relative, please contact the BID office on 01484 431758 and our Street Rangers can escort them to a safe space.”

Sam Shaw, Banking Consultant at the Halifax bank in Huddersfield, welcomed the initiative.

He said: “I think it’s a great campaign. It raises awareness of the issue and will provide customers with support – especially the older generation – to make them feel safer.”
